The bandit began to pull the trigger but hesitated. Over the sound of the crackling fire, he could hear whistling. Ezekiel lay on his back, hands behind his head, looking at the stars. The ballad was sharp and low in pitch. He continued to whistle. The bandit’s gun began to shake and he let go of William. He slowly stood up and pointed the gun at Ezekiel who lay still, admiring the night sky. “I shot you…I hit you,” he mumbled Ezekiel turned his head, “Yes…yes you did.” Suddenly the Blood Rider’s eyes went black and he gritted his teeth exposing fangs. “Now it’s my turn,” he hissed Ezekiel lunged from the ground like a wolf and tackled the man, pinning him to the ground. He drove his teeth deep into the man's neck. The bandit screamed, dropped his gun and slowly his yell turned to a gargled whimper. Ezekiel jumped to his feet, picked up the man with one hand, lifting him into the air. The bandit’s boots twitched and dangled above the desert floor. Ezekiel looked into his dying eyes. “You will not suffer long.” He then took the man and flung him to the ground. The man’s back snapped and the body went limp. Ezekiel adjusted his hat, took a deep breath and he wiped his bloody mouth. William shocked with what he witnessed, scrambled to the other two bodies and ripped a pistol from one of the corpse’s. He pointed the weapon at Ezekiel. “Stay back…don’t come near me…” Ezekiel turned around slowly. “Oh come on Will, if I wanted to kill you I would have in the cantina. Put the gun down.” William slowly lowered the gun. “I saw you get hit… he shot you several times.” “Yes, but he was not a good shot, he actually only hit me once.” William was still, except for the shaking gun in his hand. “Drop the gun, Will, you make me nervous. You might shoot yourself on accident, then we’ll never get north.” William slowly lowered the gun and sat down, leaning against a large rock. “What…what just happened?” Ezekiel walked over to William and sat down next to him. “It’s going to be fine, Will.” He reached over to a canteen that rested in the sand. He unscrewed the cap and took a long drink. “You just killed three men in seconds. I mean…you killed them with ease…and that last one…” the teacher began. “It’s simple Will….” He handed William the canteen. William raised it to his lips and took a sip. The salty taste of warm blood filled his mouth. “…I am a vampire,” Ezekiel continued.
William spit
the blood from his mouth spraying the ground and Ezekiel laughed.
